Antibiotic effective against mycobacteria. Can also inhibit DNA polymeraseRifampin is an antibiotic used in the treatment of tuberculosis and its related microbacterial infections. It is involved in the inhibition of DNA polymerase and RNA polymerase. As an antipruritic agent, it is used in the autoimmune cholestatic liver disease and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).

General Description
- Rifampin is a rifamycin class antibiotic synthesized to resemble the compound isolated from Amycolatopsis rifamycinica
Applications
- Rifampin can be used as a bacteriostatic that prevents RNA and DNA synthesis, particularly in mycobacteria
- It may also act as an antineoplastic, a neuroprotective, and inhibitor of angiogenesis
