Bovine calf serum is a cost-effective alternative to Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS). It is often used with robust cell lines when large quantities of serum are needed such as in the manufacturing of biological drugs and vaccines. Bovine calf serum is derived from calves that are generally less than 22 weeks old. It has very high levels of transferrin, which allows for iron fortification to levels of more than three times greater than FBS.

Charcoal stripped FBS has lower levels of lipophilic compounds such as hormones, growth factors, and steroids. This product is used by scientists conducting receptor or estrogen related studies which require lower levels of these components.
Gamma irradiated FBS is sterile fetal bovine serum which is commonly used in vaccine and virus production.
As a natural product, fetal bovine serum contains a wide variety of biological molecules and compounds which can influence cell development. This serum is dialyzed against physiological saline to remove small (less than 10,000 MW) potential contaminants while preserving the biological integrity of the final product. An extra filtration step of 0.1μm further ensures purity.
Fetal Bovine Serum often contains the antibiotic tetracycline (tet) and researchers using very sensitive tet-inducible gene expression systems encounter problems with unintended expression as a result. Serum containing minimal levels of tetracycline is needed to ensure accurate gene expression.
